The interview
Y Jewelry: Hi, Nirja. How would you introduce yourself to someone who wants to understand who you are beyond what's shared on social media?
Nirja: I have been a part of the fashion media space for over a decade now, my passion for the subject has been ever-changing, and over the years, I have found a niche in watches and jewellery. Today, I work with brands, publications, platforms, and agencies to develop content, narratives, and strategies that pave their interaction with their audiences better.
Y Jewelry: Balancing various responsibilities in your professional life as a business owner and content creator, how do you prioritize self-care and maintain a healthy work-life balance?
Nirja: Balance is something I have seen in my home since the very beginning; my father never brought work home, and it’s the same policy that I have maintained. Of course, as someone who works for themselves, it's more of a challenge. My rule always remains to keep one day a week, which is just for me – no meetings, no calls, no interactions except for leisure. Skincare is the first and last thing I do in a day, and I deeply enjoy it. Lastly, reading is my favourite way to unwind; I always read before bed, and 90% of my flights are where I choose reading over watching.
Y Jewelry: What's the most valuable piece of advice you've received in your career, and how has it influenced your approach to your work?
Nirja: Kindness goes a long way; being polite always pays off, and know your subject completely… talent will always get its due.
Y Jewelry: Do you have any pivotal moment in your life where your personal and professional life intersected in a way that significantly impacted your approach to both?
Nirja: I think the year was 2018 when I had to prioritize myself and my growth and decided to work for myself. It wasn’t easy at first, but it was serendipitous in a way. The kind of warmth and jest the industry showcased towards me was overwhelming! It was also a way to discover how others perceived me and challenged me to take on things I had never imagined.
Y Jewelry: Y Jewelry charms are created by women for women. How do these charms resonate with your personal style and the image you curate for yourself, both online and offline?
Nirja: I live for anecdotal pieces, and I think charms are the perfect way to add that little story to your jewelry.
